Objectives:

- to enlarge students' vocabulary on the topic;

- todevelop students' speaking and reading skills new communicative situations on the basis technologies;

- to motivate students to learn the historical events leir country;

- to teach students to be patriots of their Mother.

Equipment: quotations, cards "War" and " Peace " , lotos.

PROCEDURE

I. INTRODUCTION

World War II ended 65 years ago and many people idifferent countries remember it and honour all those to perished.

II. MAIN PART

1. BRAINSTORMING

T. I'll split you into two teams. Every team is given cards Miwords. Sort out the words into two groups - "War" ml'Teace" - and use them to explain these words.

Words: fighting, prosperity, freedom, destroy, armed forces, calm, conflict, cloudless sky, happiness, troops, dove, suffering.

2. VOCABULARY ENLARGEMENT

T: Look at the texts and read the description paying attention to the words in italics and their definitions in brackets.

The Outbreak (start) of War

Wars often start because of a conflict (strong disagreement) between countries or groups of people, about territory (land that belongs to one group or country). Country A invades country B (A enters B by force and in large numbers), and captures (also takes/takes control of) the city of X. Soldiers from country B have to retreat (go backward; opp. advance) to the city of Y. A's army and air force continue to attack the city of Y (take violent action to damage it), but B's soldiers defend it (take action to protect it) successfully.

A War Zone

The area around the city of Y is now the main war zone (the area where the fighting is happening). Country B has asked for help from its allies (countries that are friends with country B). The allies send aid (help) in the form of extra troops (large groups of soldiers) and supplies (food and other things that are needed, e.g. blankets and medicine). There is shelling (firing of guns and explosives) of t h e city every day, and hundred of soldiers are either killed or wounded (injured). Many civilians (ordinary people who are not in the army) are also killed.

3. JIGSAW READING

While reading

Read the text and working in pairs put the paragnp in the correct order.

A: The titanic struggle ended on May 9, 1945 whe Soviet forces accepted the surrender of Nazi German in the ruins of its capital. The war was the largest in historj and resulted in over 18 million Soviet casualties.

B: From that point on the Workers and People's Army gave the Germans only one choice — go back or be destroyed. This was shown at the battle of Kursk in 1943, which is considered by many to be the point when the Germans lost the strategic initiative forever. Even though the opening of the second front in 1944 by the United" States and the allies diverted German resources, the dieF had already been cast. Hitler's Reich was doomed, it was only a matter of time before the Red Army would punish it for its aggression.

C: The Red Army that ended the war was very differ-1 ent from the Army that faced the initial German invasionin 1941. Wearx>ns technology advanced dramatically during the war years. New tanks, aircraft, and jnfantry; weapons reached the front and helped turn the tide. This war was the story of t he Soviet people's battle for survival and ultimate victory.

D: On June 22, 1941 the German army launched Operation Barbarossa. At 03:00 in the morning 153 German divisions stormed across the Soviet border. They were aided by forces from 9 other nations. The attack was a complete surprise and by the end of 1941 most of European Russia was under German domination. The Germans soon reached the edges of Moscow, surrounded Leningrad, and advanced rapidly towards the Caucasus and a city on the Volga called Stalingrad. It was at these cities that the seem ingly unstoppable Wehrmacht ground to a halt in the winter of 1942.

4. SPEAKING

T: The war brought a lot of suffering to our country. descendants of that war generation, can see it through the eyes of cameramen and photographers. During four years of the war hundreds upon hundreds of photos were made. A lot of cameramen died performing their duty at the front. Stills and photographs are unbiased evidence of the horrors of the war. Imagine that you are reporters and these photos are taken by you. They'll be published in the national newspapers. Your task is to think up headings and make some captions to these photos.

T: These photos tell the story of what happened in the towns left by the Soviet army, troop movements, guerrilla raids, day-to-day heroism of Soviet people at the front and in the rear, the liberation of this country and Europe. In my opinion, we must always remember it and honour all those who defend our Motherland. The student from our school has written the poem about this war. Listen to it and choose the suitable title. Give some reasons for your choice.

IV. SUMMING-UP

T. The victory over fascism was a tremendous event in the history of mankind. It showed the greatness of our Motherland and gave wonderful examples of selflessness and heroism. But let there be peace, because peace is what people all over the world need very much.

V. HOME ASSIGNMENT

Provide some facts related to the Great Patriotic War from the life of your grandparents, great grandparents.
