PROCEDURE

I.      INTRODUCTION. WARM-UP

T: Let’s remember our last lesson together!

(Teacher shows the portraits of the cartoon heroes.)

T: Who is this? (It’s Wallace.  He is an inventor. It’s Gromit, his dog.)

What was your home task for today? (Compare the things they use in the morning with the things we use.)

Let’s watch a cartoon first and then check the sentences you have written.

(Pupils watch Episode 2 of the cartoon and read what they have written about.)

Ss: Techno-bed, techno-dresser, toaster.

Example: Wallace uses a techno-bed to get up. I don’t use a techno-bed. I get up myself.

Wallace uses a techno-dresser to put on his clothes. I don’t use techno-dresser. I put on my clothes myself.

Wallace uses a toaster to make toasts. I use a toaster too, but my toaster doesn’t put jam on bread.

II.  MAIN PART

1.    Topic presentation

T: Are these things old?

Ss: No, they are modern.

T: Today in the lesson we are going to learn how long we have had some very good things and how we can use them. We’re going to look for modern technologies around us. We’ll have a guest who’ll help us and sing a song…

2.    Focus on grammar

T: Our guest is here. Who is it?

(Teacher puts Mr Old’s portrait on the board)

T: Do you remember that Mr Old keeps all his things and never throws anything away? Oh, that is his sack! What’s in it?

(Pupils come to the teacher’s table one by one and take the sack, find the things with labels on them. The labels are marked.)

Pen – 1946

Toothbrush – 1498

Umbrella – 1637

(Pupils make sentences with the help of the scheme on the board)

Mr Old has had … since … .

(Pupils take their calculators, count and make sentences with “for”, using the same structure in which the teacher changes “since” for “for”. Teacher changes the scheme and explains it.)

We have had … since…/for …

T: We, all people of the world, have had these things for so long? So, how long have we had pens? Toothbrushes? Umbrellas? Are these things modern or old?

They all are old but we still use them! Let’s say them thank you and took into Mr Old’s sack once more. Aren’t there any modern things in it?

3.    Relaxation

(Teacher finds mobile phone in the sack. It wasn’t there when pupils made sentences about the old things.)

T: What’s this? Is it modern or old?

(Pupils sing “Mobile Phone Rap”)

THE MOBILE PHONE RAP

Can I have a mobile, Dad?

Beep-beep.

Can I have a mobile phone?

Beep-beep-beep.

I can call and I can text.

Beep-beep.

I can surf the Internet.

Beep-beep-beep-beep.

It can tell the time

And it can call the date.

Beep-beep.

I can phone if I’m late.

Beep-beep-beep-beep.

I can play games, I can do sums.

Beep-beep.

I send text fast with my thumbs.

Beep-beep-beep-beep.

You can have a mobile, that’s OK.

Beep-beep.

But don’t come here when it’s time to pay!

Beep-beep-beep-beep.

T: How can we use mobile phones? What can we do with their help? Choose the two most important things for you and write them down.

Do you know how long we have had mobile phones? What should we do? Let’s phone Mr Ols!

(Pupils discuss the questions in pairs. Teacher takes the mobile phone and speaks to Mr Old – his voice can be recorded beforehand.)

-  Hello, Mr Old!

-  Hello, friends!

-  Do you know how long we have had mobile phones?

-  Sorry, I can’t answer! It’s modern thing! I know only about old things.

-  But what should we do?

-  Ask Mr New!

(Teacher switches off the telephone)

T: Mr Old has a cousin, Mr New! Let’s phone him!

(Pupils hear the sounds which show that the telephone is busy)

Of course he is busy! Mr New is always busy. He is so modern and busy!

(Pupils hear the sound as if printer works. All the sounds are recorded beforehand. They can be found in the Internet easily.)

T: Oh children! Look! Mr New is really busy, but he has sent us a letter!

6.    Reading

Pre-reading

T: Look through the letter and find the information we need – how long we have had mobile phones. Let’s work with the letter in groups, and every group will tell us about one technology. Then groups will share the information with all of us and we’ll finish our table.

LETTER

Hello, friends!

I’ve heard that you want to know about modern technologies. Well, I will tell you about some of them. First mobile phones were invented in 1983, so we had them for 29 years.

One of the most popular things today is television. Do all of you have TVs at home? And do you know that the first TV appeared in 1932? Watching cartoons and films is so nice, isn’t it?

My favourite modern technology is a computer. You won’t believe, but the first electronic computer was built in 1942! I am really happy to have such a wonderful thing! We can find information, write letters, play games and even paint pictures with the help of it.

Do you know what my uncle’s favourite thing is? It’s his radio! He listens to music and to the news. Mr Old likes listening to the news – isn’t it funny? But he doesn’t know that we have had radios since 1866. Don’t forget to tell him about it when he comes again!

Sorry, friends, but I have to go now. You know, I’m so busy!

Yours,

Mr New.

After reading

T: What’s your technology? What can we do with its help? How long have we had it?

(Representatives of every group answer the questions about their technology and help the other students to fill into the table.)

III.           SUMMING-UP. HOME ASSIGNMENT.

T: What have we done in the lesson? What modern technologies have we mentioned? What can we do with their help? What modern technologies have helped us in the lesson?

At home you will choose four things and fill in our table. What technology is it? What can we do with its help? And how long have we had it?
