     T. Good afternoon, my dear children. I’m glad to see you.

     T. The topic of our today’s lesson is “Ecology”. We’ll go deeper into the environmental problems and their influence on the man and wildlife.

     T. Let’s recite a poem. Look at the board and repeat after me.

The fish in the sea are dying

From the pollution we create

We’ve got to stop polluting

Before it’s too late.

The planet is in trouble

It gets worse every day

We have to help our planet

In every possible way

The woods and forests

They’re cutting down the trees

We’ve got to save the forests

Everyone agrees.

The hole in the ozone layer

Is getting bigger every day

We’ve got to stop air pollution

We have to find a way.

     ІІІ. Основна частина уроку

     T. So, we should take care of our planet. Why? There are a lot of ecological problems. What environmental problems are mentioned in the poem?

     P1. There are mentioned such ecological problems as water pollution, deforestation, hole in the ozone layer, air pollution.

     T. Have a look t the following slides. What problems do these pictures relate to?

     P1. This picture relates to the problem of pollution because the beach is covered with litter.

     P2. This picture relates to the pollution of water and air.

     P3. This picture relates to the problem of traffic because it influences badly on our environment.

     P4. This picture relates to the problem of shortage of nature resourсes.

     T. Let’s speak about some ecological problems. What can you say about water pollution?

     P1. Today the situation with water is very disastrous. There is no ocean or sea which is not used as dump. In the oceans some Governments test nuclear weapons. Many seas and rivers are used for dumping industrial and nuclear waste. These poisons kill fishes and sea animals. If people drink such water they can die too. It happens so because factories and plants produce a lot of waste and pour it into rivers. So they poison the water.

     T. Thank you. What can you say about air pollution?

     P2. The most of the pollution in big cities comes from cars and buses. Air pollution causes a lot of ecological problems, green house effect, hole in the ozone layer. Ozone layer protects us from ultraviolet radiation, but if there are holes in the ozone layer this radiation can get to the earth. Such radiation can cause skin cancer. To make air clean we need good filters at nuclear power stations, at factories and plants, cars and public transport.

     T. Thank you for your answers. Without a doubt these are global problems. And what about the litter, we can observe it everywhere. Please act out the dialogues (pupils prepared the dialogues at home) concerning this issue.

Mike. Is that you, Nick? It’s me, Mike. Out grove looks terrible. It’s piled with rubbish. I was shocked to see that.

Nick. Calm down! Have you got any idea?

Mike. Yes. I have an idea. We have to do something about this mess. I’d like to start our own “Clean up the Countryside” society. How do you like this idea?

Nick. I think it’s great. Let’s meet tomorrow and discuss it.

Mike. OK. I’ll give a call to Rosie and Jane. Would you phone Vicky?

Nick. Sure. Let’s meet after classes.

Nick. Hi, Vicky! It’s me, Nick. Mike has an idea to start our own “Clean up the Countryside” society. The grove is in a terrible mess. And we are going to clear away all the rubbish that has been left dumpers. Will you join us?

Vicky. Sure. That’s a great idea. I agree we have to clear away the mess. When and where shall we meet?

Nick. After classes. At the grove. Don’t forget to bring plastic bags for the rubbish.

Vicky. All right. I’ll be at the grove after classes.

Mike. Excuse me. What are you going to do with all this litter? Are you going to leave it here?

Picnicker. What do you mean, young lady?

Mike. I mean that you should put all your rubbish into a plastic bag and take it away. You just can’t leave this rubbish here. You turn this beautiful place into a rubbish pile.

Picnicker. Why do you think so? I’m not going to leave these empty bottles and cans here. I enjoy spending time here and I’ll never spoil this lovely place.

Protection of nature in Ukraine

     We are living in time of rapid scientific and technological progress, which is accompanied by other increasing consumption of the world’s natural resources.

     Such vital sources of life as air, water, minerals as well as fauna and flora are being wasted and destroyed.

     Protection of nature has become one of the actual problems of the 20th century. More and more people in all countries are raising their voices in defence of Mother Nature. According to the 27th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, July the 5th is Environment Day.

     Our country pays much attention to the question of nature conservation. New laws and resolutions are adopted every year. Their aim is to protect the atmosphere from pollution, control the use of water resources and preserve plants, birds, animals from extinction.

     The earth provides people with mineral resources, rivers, forests, meadows, fields – everything it makes the foundation of industrial and agricultural production.

     That’s why we should pay much attention to the regional use of natural resources. Success in protecting nature is possible only is all countries all over the world join their efforts. We hope we all preserve the wealth of our land and even the wealth in the future.

T. Now, I’ll read you the statements according to the text, and you will raise red or green card depending on your choice – agree or disagree.

  1. Keep homes, towns and cities ecologically clean.
  2. Have more physical activities.
  3. Walk more.
  4. Watch less TV and work less on computers.
  5. Eat healthy food.
